Penner-Ash
Lynn Penner-Ash was still the winemaker at Rex Hill in ’98 when she released a minute quantity of her first eponymous pinot noir. It got a good score, cost about fifty bucks, and sold out very fast. It created a bit of a buzz because it was somewhat better than any of the wines she had made at Rex Hill over the previous ten years as head winemaker there. Don’t get me wrong - the Rex Hill wines are good - even better than good. But they have achieved the status of being one of the state’s largest producers. It’s hard to make truly distinctive pinot noir in large batches.
In any case, Lynn’s next release from her new label was also great, and a new winemaking star was confirmed. From ’98 through 2001, the Penner-Ash Pinot Noir has sold quickly, at a top-tier price point, and drawn critical praise across the board.
One reason for the success of the wine is the style in which it is made. It is an open-knit, juicy, forward wine that simply gushes with flavor.
