Winery Focus
Shea
Founded by Dick and Deirdre Shea in 1996, Shea Wine Cellars is a producer of world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all made from fruit grown on-site at Shea Vineyard. Shea Wine Cellars was a natural outgrowth of Shea Vineyard which was first planted to wine grapes in 1989.
The 200-acre vineyard property lies at the heart of Oregon's Yamhill-Carlton District and supplies fruit to some of Oregon's and California's finest wineries.
Roughly 10% of the Pinot noir fruit produced each year by Shea Vineyard is used by Shea Wine Cellars for its releases. The other 90% of the Pinot noir fruit is sold to some of the finest winemakers in Oregon and California.
The vineyard sits on sedimentary soil over fractured sandstone. Shea was one of the early vineyards in this area of Yamhill County and on this soil type. Today, the vineyard is surrounded by some of the premiere wineries making Pinot noir in the “New World.”

Shea Pinot Noir Estate 2008
Price $40.00
$40 / bottle Wine Spectator 93 Points! Harvey Steiman's Notes: ""Pure and generous, explosive on the nose, rose petal and strawberry notes mingling with cherry and chocolate on the long and vivid finish. 93 points, non-blind.">br> The Estate bottling is a blend of lots from some of the best blocks of this expansive vineyard -- the blocks Dick Shea saves for himself. It's the best thing in the wine world has to offer -- a guaranteed good wine, every vintage.
This '08 is flashy, stuffed with fruit, seasoned with only the finest wood, and shows an exotic level of complexity. It is chock full of the signature creamy black cherry fruit that defines the vineyard site. The flavors show mature phenolics, but moderate alcohol -- a characteristic of the vintage.
To drink this now, decant to drink over a couple of days -- there is an accessible layer, but it is still young and has a long life ahead. The hype over the '08s is, in general, justified, and this is certainly one of the blue chip wines of the vintatge. Read More...
