Carlton Cellars Pinot Noir Cape Lookout 2008
$30 / bottle Carlton Cellars got started in fairly grand fashion. They got good grapes, from some top sources. They got Ken Wright to make the wine – a winning strategy by any standard.
And the wines were good. Eventually, proprietor Dave Grooters started using the grapes from his own vineyard, and built his own facility, conveniently located right next door to Ken’s place, thus continuing the takeover of the town of Carlton by wine interests.
Clearly, Dave knows the business. This was a wine that sold well in lesser vintages for $45, But when it came time to bottle his ‘08s, he made a smart decision: he reduced the price on his Cape Lookout bottling to a manageable thirty bucks, making this is a bona-fide deal.. In my book thirty is the new forty-five, and is now the sweet spot for really, really good wines that are also a relative bargain.
Like other ‘08s at this time, it’s youthful, and focused. It shows some vivacious wild berry flavors, glows with color, and has an amazing aroma. As compelling as it is to try now, just another few weeks or months in the bottle will yield a broadly-flavored, complex wine with layers of flavor and great length. Decant this now, or hold until Spring.
